Creating Characters

Developing fully-dimensional characters for improvisation and performance can sometimes prove difficult. The following questions can help you to build understanding of your character, in order to develop a deeper knowledge, generate instinctive responses and create a stronger performance.

  • What newspaper do you read?
  • What's your idea of a good night out?
  • What's your idea of a good holiday?
  • Where do you shop for clothes?
  • What's your favourite food?
  • What music do you like to listen to?
  • What are your favourite television programmes?
  • What are your religious beliefs?
  • Do you have any particular rituals or routines?
  • What do you do before getting up / going to bed?
  • What is your education / intellectual status?
  • What is your state of health?
  • What are your spiritual beliefs / moral codes?
  • What is your ambition?
  • Who are your heroes / heroines?
  • What is your family background?
  • What events / happenings have shaped your life?
  • Who / what do you relate to or love?
  • What pet hates do you have?
  • What is your attitude to work?
  • What is your attitude to your physical appearance?
  • What makes you cry?
  • Where would you like to see yourself in ten years' time?
  • How would you like to be remembered?
